Origin of the Casio G-Shock DW-5600

Founded in Japan in 1946 by Tadao Kashio, Casio began it's journey by creating their successful electronic calculators. However, it wasn’t until 1974 that the brand stepped into the realm of wrist wear by creating their first watch, the Casiotron. From there, the company successfully began releasing a fleet of watches suitable for every audience. But 39 years later, the Casio G-Shock DW-5600 remains crowned as the fan favorite.

Inspiration

In 1983, Casio proposed the idea of creating a watch which was able to handle the tests of time yet still be stylish. The G-Shock DW-5600 went through two years of prototypes, creating the initial model which was conceptualized to be able to withstand all environments. The functionality of the watch went through countless tests and Project Tough Team was finally able to launch the completed watch in 1987.

Creation

The DW-5600’s continual evolution from its initial prototype displays Casio's dedication and attention to detail when constructing a watch meant to carry multiple functions. The DW-5600 provided users with a shock resistant, solar powered and stylish piece of wristwear. The watch's initial model was originally constructed in Japan and designed in a resin colorway, but with its popularity growing, Casio decided to finally expand the color palette of the model. Casio’s addition of Metallic, Mixed Color Mold and Full Surface print models opened the door for new consumers and collaborators.

Collaboration

The history of collaboration and G-Shock models spans to the ‘80s with the co-signs made from artists such as The Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and N.W.A, from there the watch was brought into the public eye. G-Shock’s newfound love from street culture began to reach its pinnacle as many streetwear brands began to inquire about collaborating on G-Shock models such as the DW-5600. Since then, the DW-5600 has been collaborated on by brands and artists such as BAPE, Stussy, Keith Haring, The Hundreds, Hender Scheme, CLOT and many more. The success of these collaborations continued into 2022, nearly 40 years after its original release the watch still remains as one of the most historical items in streetwear history.
